How to Adapt to Rotating Shift Work

Rotating shift work is hard on the average person. It leaves your body tired, your energy wired, and your brain so confused it’s about to beg you to make up your mind and pick a bedtime. However, this rotating shift work is an inevitability of certain careers. And that means it’s up to you to adapt.

So, how do you do this? How do you go from working days, to working nights, to back again? Yes, one answer is coffee – lots and lots of coffee – and also some of the following:

Prepare yourself

If your boss asks for your input, request to go from days to nights. This is easier than the opposite. It’s also easier if you have a few days before you start your new shift. These days provide you with the chance to adjust yourself naturally – by staying up later each night, for instance.

Take naps

In childhood, most of us dreaded naps because we feared missing out: Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse were going to show up with buckets of candy as soon as we fell asleep. Yet, as adults, naps are fun: move over baseball, they’re our new favorite pastime! If you can take naps – you have the time and the ability – do! Even laying down for twenty minutes can make a heap of difference.

Consume caffeine

Sure, the coffee above was mentioned in jest, but it may actually help, too. If you’re not a coffee drinker, try tea, but stay away from high sugar energy drinks; their perks are short-lived. You should eat frequently, too – refrain from large meals and opt for small ones. instead.

Make your home conducive to sleep

When you work shifts, you have to sleep when you can. Having a home that allows this is essential. There are a few things that help: get the black out curtains (the ones found in Vegas hotels), take a warm bath before bed, and try ear plugs if your home is noisy (i.e., if you have children).

Ask for shorter rotations

Some people find that shorter rotations are easier on the body than longer ones. This might be true for you. If it is, ask your boss if you can switch things up. But, remember, the recovery time in between rotations is most important: use it wisely and take time to prepare yourself for the shift that’s coming.
